When purchasing fasteners for OEM production or critical structural connections, verifying documentation and testing standards is essential. A single substandard batch can cause joint relaxation, thread stripping, or hydrogen embrittlement.
Key Testing Protocols to Demand
1. Proof Load and Tensile Testing: Verifies that the fastener meets its rated mechanical strength (e.g., ISO Class 8.8, 10.9, 12.9 or ASTM A193 B7) without permanent elongation or premature necking.
2. Torque-Tension (Skidmore-Wilhelm) Testing: Measures the relationship between applied torque and developed clamping force. This determines the exact nut factor (K-factor) under specific lubrication or coating conditions.
3. Salt Spray Corrosion Testing (ASTM B117): Essential for evaluating protective coatings such as zinc-nickel plating, hot-dip galvanizing, or Dacromet/Geomet finishes.
